I Gusti Ngurah Rai and His Ciung Wenara Troops

Indonesia got its independency on 17 August 1945. All of the citizens hope that there were no more colonialist and colonialism anymore. Unfortunately, Bali as an area which far from central Government of Indonesia was defeated by The Dutch after the independence. Colonel I Gusti Ngurah Rai is one of so many Balinese knights that tried to free Bali from the Dutch attack. Before we talk about him, we should be better to know about his basic information first. I Gusti Ngurah Rai is a man who born in Carangsari, Petang, Badung District, Bali on 30th Januari 1917. He is the son of I Gusti Ngurah Palung. In 1936 he got the military education at the School of Military Cadres in Gianyar Bali. After graduated, he joined the Reserve Opleiding Voor Officieren in Magelang.

After Indonesia got its independency, Colonel I Gusti Ngurah Rai made a force named Sunda Kecil. He was its lieutenant. Not long after that, I Gust Ngurah Rai went to Yogyakarta to meet the command and to get consolidation. Finish with his business in Yougyakarta, he went back to Bali. When he was back, Bali was controlled by the colonials. I Gusti Ngurah Rai felt so mad and made a decision to fight against the Dutch force. He and his troops fought the Dutch on Tabanan. I Gusti Ngurah Rai succeed to make all of the Dutch police surrender and hand over their weapons.

Based on this condition, the Dutch attacked the other area in Bali. The Dutch deployed the troops to the Margarana Village and the big war happened. Colonel I Gusti Ngurah Rai with his troops the Ciung Wenara tried hard to fight the dutch one more time. This fight called as the Puputan Margarana war which means a fare-the-well war on Margarana Areas. He and his troops which had the amount at least a thousand fought on this war.

This war was the last war for I Gusti Ngurah Rai and his troops. Unfortunately, Colonel I Gusti Ngurah Rai and some of his troops were killed on this war. He died on 20th November 1946. To remember his service for the country and as a reward, the Indonesian government gave the title of national hero to I Gusti Ngurah Rai and confers Mahaputra Star and promoted to Brigadier General (posthumously). Not only that. Airport in Bali also use his name to remember his fought for Indonesia.
